Despite many opposing views, El Salvador started to accept and use Bitcoin as a legal currency. As of September 7, the country now accepts Bitcoin as a means of payment. After the approval of this historic decision, almost all businesses in it, including the local branch of McDonald's, began to accept Bitcoin payments.
El Salvador became the first country in the world to recognize Bitcoin as a legal currency. Salvadorans now have an entirely new option to pay at stores and services across the country, including fast-food giant McDonald's, which has begun accepting Bitcoin payments over the Lightning Network.
It made the news when Aaron van Wirdum, a local journalist, was told that he was presented with a printed QR code when he visited a local McDonald's restaurant and chose to pay with crypto. The code redirects the user to an invoice page on the LN where they can complete the payment.
As of 2019, McDonald's has 19 branches in El Salvador, and as far as is known, all branches in El Salvador are planned to accept crypto payments.
